Pinterest Interests

My friend Heather recently did a blog about all of the foods that she's tried on Pinterest. I thought I would steal her idea, because hey, isn't that what Pinterest is all about? I'm going to take it slow and break it out by my boards. Focus on one or two at a time. Below is a list of some of the things that I have tried during the past months that I've been a member of the Pinterest world.

1. Cool Stuff for Kids:
Playdough Mats: I printed these off when I finally got my printer going. I actually printed off three sets: two for me and one for my sister's kids. They love it! It gives them something to do with their playdough besides using cookie cutters (which is always fun, but kids like variety just like we do).

100 Things to do this Summer: My boys are having fun trying to find the activities we do on our list to see if they can mark off yet another activity. I'm actually proud of us as we've done about 20 or so already. Of course we won't get the full 100 but it is also great when I'm trying to think of something for them to do.

Behavior Chart: I haven't quite got this one put together but it is printed out. It seems like a great way for the kids to regulate their behavior without me having to shout all the time. I'll let you know in a couple months if it works or not for us.

Just a Mom

I've been looking for a job the past couple months. So far, I haven't found anything. The problem with working while you have young children, is making enough at the job so you can pay your daycare and still make it worth your while to be away from your kids. I have a lot of qualifications for my resume, but the one that fills up most of my time over the past seven years is "Just a Mom".

I've seen a little blurb on Facebook over the past few days about all that "Just a Mom" does. So I decided to keep track of what I've done over the past few days. Here are all the jobs I've done just recently...

1. Chauffer
2. Line cook
3. Short order cook
4. Baker
5. Pastry Chef
6. Plumber
7. Maid
8. Grounds maintenance
9. Car washer
10. Garbage man
11. Science technician
12. Art director
13. Photographer
14. Choir Member
15. Service volunteer
16. Graphic designer
17. Bookkeeper
18. Construction worker
19. Conflict management director
20. Advertising agent

...and I'm pretty sure I've missed a few in there. My dear friends. If you ever start getting down on yourself, I challenge you to make this list. We are Valuable. We are Wonderful. It is amazing we are sane! And my sweet friends that are already working...add about 50 more things in there that you do at your job every day and then come home to be "Just a Mom."

Kristi goes camping

June 9, 2012
It is 5:22 am, the birds are chirping like crazy, the river is flowing nearby and I can't get back to sleep. About a half hour ago I woke up to rain on my tent. Oh, did I mention we're camping? So my tent has a rain flap but the little boys' tent doesn't. I got up to make sure they are dry. Pete is sleeping with them because Connor ended up sleeping in the bed of the truck with the cover. This because he had a little spider on his face earlier yesterday and refused to take the chance of bugs in his tent. Thus, Pete is sleeping with Steel, Reilly, and Cole and I ended up with a whole tent to myself.

But back to the rain flap. I have one because I insisted it be put on. In typical male fashion, they left it off the other tent because it was bright and sunny and 80 degrees with nary a cloud in the sky. Now, there is a rain flap on their tent and I can't go back to sleep even though I'm very tired. My brain has started churning for the day and won't shut up so I can get a little more rest. So annoying.

I need to find a job. I need to get Reilly caught up in his school. I really want to start writing my blog again or maybe I should start a whole new one. I wonder if anyone would even read it? I need to get the garage door fixed so Pete doesn't have to jump out of the car each time we pull up. The water fountain outside needs to be fixed so the kiddies can use it this summer. I've got to get back to the gym and start training for the Tough Mudder. I need to pay for the Tough Mudder.  Is Matt really ok in Alaska? This could likely be our last family outing with Connor if he gets a job. I can't believe how much it hurts to think of having family trips with only Steel, Reilly and Cole and not Matt and Connor. I miss my son. I wish Pete would stop chewing tobacco so I can kiss him whenever I want. I hate it when I want to make out a little with him and he turns around and I have to kiss his cheek cause he's got a wad in his lip. So gross. I need to start having dinner with my siblings one at a time so I can get to know them better. I'm starting to feel bad about how little I know Jeff's wife. It's been two years and I don't really know her at all still. I should fix that. I have so much laundry to do when we get home.

These are the things that are keeping me up and won't let me sleep. They say if you write it down your brain can let it go for a while. Let's see because it's almost dawn and I'd really like to get in another hour.

10:00 am
After another 1/2 hour or so I did manage to fall back asleep. My lovely husband got up with the boys and I actually slept until 8:00 (with the aid of the sleeping bag over my head to hide the sun). Breakfast of pancakes and bacon is now done, Pete is taking a nap and the boys are rearing to do more exploring. Unfortunately, we are on the wrong side of the highway from the trails and traffic is too busy to attempt ushering little ducklings across. We'll just hang out some more until its time for hotdogs for lunch. Except that as I'm writing this I realize I forgot to bring any buns or condiments for the hotdogs. Yikes. It has been a REALLY long time since I've camped!

Guess we'll head home early, hit the store on the way home and roast hotdogs on the deck over the little camp stove. Ahhh well. We tried.  And just a question to the Universe: why, WHY do I have to pee three times at night when I'm camping and the latrine is a block away and I never have to at home?!?

Our Christmas to Everyone!

Merry Christmas Family and Friends:

As always, at this point the year seems to have flown by. There were times during the year though, that it seemed to drag on forever. We made it through our second deployment this year. We are finally all back together and everyone is blessed with good health. We hope this letter finds all of you in good spirits and remembering the true meaning of Christmas. We are so blessed with our knowledge of the gospel and what our Savior has done for us. To celebrate His birth is always a very special time. There were two special highlights for the year—a trip to Samoa and Peter making it back from Deployment #2. More about those later. Our family is just getting older and better this year. We are always amazed at our boys. They keep us busy and bring so much joy to our lives.

Matthew, 17, is a wonderful young man. He has been getting mail from colleges almost every day. He’s only shown interest in a couple. Mom is in denial that we only have 1 ½ years before he steps out on his own. It is flying by too quickly. Matt is working on his Scouting, playing Bass in orchestra, bass guitar and piano just for fun, and of course, video games. He is taking two AP classes this year and planning on four next year. Oh and he came home from school one day and told us that he can play the cello as well. Yeah. We are so impressed with the young man Matthew is. When we were in Samoa, he got right in there with his dad and helped out. His dad got a kick out of seeing his boys wandering around the island, sightseeing.

Connor, 15, has his permit but actually doesn’t drive. He got to go kayaking a little in the bay by our hotel in Samoa this year. He went to scout camp and he and Matt got snowboards for an early Christmas—since they have the whole week before Christmas off. He’s working at the Commissary and pulling in more per hour in tips than mom is making! He’s very generous sharing with Matt, as Matt has been unable to work this year with his school work. He is amazing with his baby brother Cole. He has curly hair that mom loves and he hates. He’s always trying to flatten it. He is doing well in school and still hates the “social studies” classes. He is into the games like Matt. Wishing so badly that mom would let them get more “M” games to play. He’s also become quite the clothes-horse this year. Good thing he’s working to pay for his new “habit”.

Steel, 5, is determined to skip past 6,7,8,&9 and go right to 10! He talks pretty much non-stop. He is going to be a missionary, a soldier, a dad, and a rock star—the order of which depends on the day. He started Kindergarten this year and loves it. We’ve started the age old battle of teacher vs. parents. “Mrs. Nelson said…” has become very common place in our house. He took to Samoa like a duck to water. He is the only one, besides Pete, that didn’t need any adjustment time and by the time we left he had everyone wrapped around his finger. Steel is a little ladies man. We were dropping him off at school one day and he yells, “There’s Allison! Hey Allison, I had a dream about you last night!” Turns out it was a transformers dream and we were soooo glad Allison’s dad had already gotten back into the car before Steel started yelling! His current girlfriends are Amanda, Allison, Kierstan, Matt’s friend Karlie, and Sister Walker at church. ;)

Reilly, 3, has been a surprise this year. Our cute little angel boy has decided to be as stubborn as his parents ever thought of being. The kid gives the best cold shoulder of anyone I know. He has the memory of an elephant, a one track mind, and boy can he hold a grudge! He’s been going to pre-school and he likes it but we’re gonna take a break until next fall. Mom is just selfish and wants him home with her as long as possible. He loves to tell mom that he has blue eyes like her and Cole…so it naturally follows that blue is his favorite color. This is Reilly’s big year of learning to do things all by himself. I hope we all survive.

Cole, 20 months, is everyone’s baby. He’s my only baby who is in the 50th % for height and weight. Now this makes him totally normal but after having 4 boys in the 90-95th % he seems really tiny to us. Being our last, we can pretend he’s a “baby” for a little while longer. We’ve decided this child has NO pain reflex at all. He will head-butt his dad and it’s dad that cries, not Cole! Quite often he’ll be bleeding from a cut or scrape and none of us know what he did because he never cried. Mom didn’t get a true “1-year” picture because he was 18 months old before he went a full week without having a scrape or bruise on his face—and that is not exaggeration. He can certainly hold his own with 4 big brothers and dad. Thank goodness he loves being cuddly with mom. He is the heart of this family. Cole was also a big hit in Samoa—the “angel” baby. We got several serious offers from people wanting to know if they could keep him. Sorry, not happening!

Pete is back from deployment. He got home the end of August. We are so blessed that he got through round two with no problems. He had a good bunch of guys with him and that made a big difference. He has also changed jobs since he got home. He is no longer Infantry, but now works in Retention—helping soldiers with their reenlistments when it comes time. Like most things, it isn’t turning out quite like we expected. Yes it’s an “office job” but he seems to work longer hours lately than he did when he was Infantry-go figure. We don’t know exactly where we are going to be at the end of next year. Pete thought he had an extension in the bag so we could stay until Matt graduates, but now we’re not sure. We’ll hopefully know more about plans after the new year.

Kristi is keeping busy with the boys and working nights at Walmart. She gets to work in the Fabric and Crafts department. Pete isn’t sure that is such a good idea but she’s been really good so far about not spending her whole paycheck before she gets it. A lot of her friends just moved away from Fort Wainwright and she’s missing them. But very grateful that she has made so many good friends in her ward at church as well. She decided to do a homemade Christmas this year and has bought minimal presents for the boys. She’s made quite a few things and loves the feeling of “making” vs. “buying”. She hopes that the boys are at least a little appreciative and won’t be too bummed that they don’t get all the new gadgets their friends are getting.

Our Samoa trip was totally unexpected. Sadly, Peter’s uncle passed away in Feb. and it was something that he really needed to be at. It would use up all of his R&R leave. If we didn’t get the family down to see him, we wouldn’t have seen him for a whole year. So, we went. I won’t lie, it was not the fairy tale vacation we had wanted for the boys. With 3 days to plan, money tight, a family funeral, and going from -25 to 90 degrees with humidity, the first week was pretty brutal. Everyone but Pete and Steel got sick. Luckily, we got to meet so many of Peter’s family and we made some great new friends. And of course, the island is amazingly beautiful. I just wanted to sit and watch the ocean. It seemed a little bit different wherever we went on the island. We ended up in a wonderful little hotel our last week with the ocean right outside our door. We did have some fun times then. We still wish Matt and Connor could have done and seen more while we were there, but at least now they know where their father comes from. And our family doubled in size overnight now that we can put names with faces. Thanks so much to all of you who put us up and fed us and made us feel at home with you. We appreciate it so much!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night! We love and miss you!

Christmas gifts for the boys.

My goal this year was to make more things for Christmas instead of buying a bunch of videos and games and such. I had a lot of fun making things. I forgot how much nicer it is to be able to make something very inexpensively yet give it your time and love. These are some of the gifts that I did for the boys this year.

Reilly wanted a blue scarf and Steel wanted a yellow scarf, because of course, Bumblebee is his favorite.

I made bean bags for the little ones and a soft book for Cole. He loves to read with us but destroys our books very quickly. The squares and circles in the picture are pillow cases that I made for Matt & Connor's body pillows that they got.
Reilly's cape in Optimus Prime colors.

Steel's cape in Bumblebee colors. I also made a little one for Cole.
Made pillows for Steel, Reilly, and Cole. Cole's is a bit smaller than these. I made this scarf on a whim for Matt. Figured if he didn't like it, I do. Sure enough, he "gifted" it to me on Christmas day.
All in all, I had much more fun this Christmas than last. The funny thing is with making the other stuff, I forgot to make pj's and ended up buying them this year. Oh well.
